Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha. A Social Welfare & Philanthropic Organization.
The Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha one of the oldest Social Welfare Philanthropic Organization of India was established in the middle of July 1872 AD (1278 BS) in Dhaka (presently the capital of Independent Bangladesh) during British Rule in undivided India for philanthropic purpose with a special mission of diffusion of useful knowledge for empowerment of women.
The founders of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha viz noble social activists and eminent personalities of Tripura Advocate Kailash Ch. Nandi, Advocate Kailash Ch. Dutta, Educationist Guru Charan Bhattacharya, Purna Chandra Bardhan, Tarak Chandra Guha, Sashi Bhushan Dutta, thought that only through the propagation of Knowledge & Education, could succeed to combat the evils of illiteracy, superstition & untouchability. Many primary schools were set up for Girls in the villages of Tripura, Comilla, Chandpur & Brahmanberia etc, at that time. The syllabus was prepared by Sabha itself, even the work Education course was also included therein for helping them to grow self sufficient
The maiden Examination was held on 22nd Jaisthya 1279 BS. ie. in the year 1873AD. Since inception the Royal Family of the Independent Tripura State headed by His Highness Maharaj Birchandra Manikya Bahadur was the Chief partrons of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha.
Thus the Revolutionary activities of Sabha attracted the people of different walks of life of Tripura as well as Bengal. Very soon many eminent Personalities of Tripura Advocate Gobinda Ch. Das Advocate Sir Shamsul Huda, A. Rasur Bar At Law, Insurance Tycoon Abinash Ch. Sen, Nawab Sirojul Islam, Dr. Abinas, Ch. Bhattacharya, Educationist Ashwini Kumar Chakraborty, Guru Bandhu Bhattacharya Pandit Rash Mohan Chakraborty, Journalist Bidhubushan Sengupta, Prof. Rai Haran Chakraborty and many more had joined and started Philanthropic activities.
It revealed from the History that a drift of remarkable number of student and general public gradually increased for higher education and their livelihood to the city of Kolkata at the later Part of Nineteenth century. Hence to honour the demand of time, the main office of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha was shifted from the city of Dhaka to this city of Kolkata in the Bengali year 1300 i.e. in 1894 AD. however the Dhaka branch, continued to function for a long period. Later that branch was closed and presently we have no branches at any places other than in Kolkata. The welfare activities at the main office of Kolkata received a great momentum and number of members increased gradually by leaps and bounds. Very soon the Sabha realised the necessity of one Permanent accommodation in the city of Kolkata for its better functioning. A building fund was created and the Sabha had started collecting donations for building Fund' form its members, patrons and well wishers to fulfil the 'dream' of having a permanent accommodation in Calcutta.
The chief patron of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha, the King of Independent Tripura his Highness Maharaj Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur had played a very significant role for the same and donated more than Rs. 7,000/- (Rupees seven thousand) to the building Fund. After untiring efforts, the Sabha Managed to purchase a piece of land of Four and half katha (41/2 kattha) at the cost of Rs. 18000/- (Rupees eighteen thousand only) from Kolkata Improvement Trust at 7, Khetra Das Lane near Mission Row extension, Kolkata and his Highness Maharaja (the king) of Independent State Tripura Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bhahadur had laid the Foundation Stone of Sabha Bhavan on 17th March, 1940.
Unfortunately the activities of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha came to a stand still due to horrors of 2nd World War followed by the wide spread Famine in 1943 in Bengal and after words the heart broken act of Partition of India shattered the whole Economic life of our country. Bengal was highly efected and miseries of the people of Tripura turned Refugee (Uprooted from Native land) by overnight, knew no bounds. The condition of Bengal was so critical that the entire humanity was doomed to utter run. The Dream of having a permanent place received a big jolt at this critical juncture.
The Tripura Hitasadhani had come forward at that time with help by its small means for reconstruction of uprooted people (the Refugees) of Tripura The Sabha had started its welfare activities earnestly in the changed political scenario of the country. The utmost importance was given upon the rehabilitation work of Refugees (the uprooted people) of Tripura. Commilla, Chandpur, Brahmanberia, The Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha was able to provide employment and arrange livelihood to a significant numbers of people of Tripura in the Enterprises viz M/s Bengal Immunity, M/s M Bhattacharya & Co etc; owned by Tripura's illustrious sons according to their eligibility
On the eve of centenary celebration of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha, the dream of having a Permanent place in the city of Kolkata came true. At last the Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha purchased its own building Sabha Bhavan at 3, Surya Sen Street (erstwhile Mirzapur Street) Kolkata - 700 012 just opposite to college square near University of Calcutta on 2nd March, 1971 The land of 7, Khetra Das Lane, Kolkata was sold for that purpose.
Now all social welfare & philanthropic activities of Tripura Hitasadhini Sabha are being performed and organised from its own building situated at 3, Surya Sen Street, Kolkata - 700 012.
